Kinders level up to first grade!

Chairman Christine Sage and Jr. Miss Southern Ute joined the 2nd Annual MMIWG2S+ Run/Walk along with members of their immediate family, Tuesday, May 5. The virtual event was hosted by the Grand Prairie Friendship Center & Hug A Sister, encouraging participants to honor and bring awareness for Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls while still social distancing.

Sage family walk for MMIW

Dancing Spirit Arts Center in collaboration with Pine River Shares (PRS) has included art kits in each of the meal boxes handed out by PRS at the Ignacio High School on Tuesdays. “Kids are being impacted by this epidemic, they need a creative outlet,” said Kasey Correia. Dancing Spirit is asking for donations of glue, crayons, chalk, etc. to keep providing the art kits. “Art is therapeutic,” expressed Correia.

Ignacio School Resource Officer, Preston Rea hands sack lunches through a car window to community members. The Ignacio School District provided the takeout lunches, Tuesday, April 7. 10 Years Ago: Alaskan Native Jennifer Bennis was crowned Miss Hozhoni 2010-2011 on March 27 during the 46th annual Hozhoni Days PowWow, a two-day event capping off a week of cultural celebrations at Fort Lewis College in Durango. Emotions ran high as the reigning Miss Hozhoni, Seratha Largie, passed on her title and gave a welcoming embrace to Bennis, her successor. Bennis is a Fort Lewis college student from Dillingham, Alaska, and an Alaskan Native of the Curyung Tribe.

Cooking, it matters

10 Years Ago: Lights dimmed in the Denver Coliseum during the Saturday night Grand Entry as attendees celebrated tribal veterans with an Honor Song. The ceremony was repeated five times over three days at the Denver March Powwow. Thousands of representatives from tribes across the United States convened at the annual event to participate in traditional dance, song, storytelling and other activities.
