2017 SunUte Youth Basketball League

The Ignacio Middle School Bobcats saw home court action during the Ignacio boy’s basketball trio. Dove Creek, Ouray and Ignacio competed in an all day tournament, Saturday, Feb. 4 in the Ignacio Middle School gym. Nakai Lovato sprints to the loose ball during action against the Dove Creek Bullpups. The Ignacio Middle School A-Team will be competing on home court again as Ignacio hosts the League Basketball Tournament, Saturday, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m.

Mid school sees home court action

Tribal member Ethan Barry, 9, fourth grader at Ignacio Elementary School, competed in the Annual Spelling Bee hosted by the Ignacio School District on Thursday, Feb. 9. There were about 50 competitors from the fourth to eighth grades, and Ethan made it to the 6th round with only ten students left. “We are so proud of Ethan, we hope he continues to do well at school,” said Marge Barry. Ethan is the son of Preston Barry and LeNora Martinez.

Tribal member Brett Martinez is the Owner/Executive Chef of B’z&C’z catering company. He stopped by Ms. Schweiger’s third grade Ignacio Elementary class, on Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, Feb. 14 to demonstrate how to make tasty chocolate strawberries. Martinez has recently opened his own catering company. Martinez’ skill set and experience include culinary instructor with “Cooking Matters,” a No Kid Hungry volunteer.
