Southern Ute Council Member, Vanessa Torres and Vice-Chairman, Lorelei Cloud wrap tribal elder Vida B. Peabody in a Pendleton blanket given as a gift for her 93rd birthday. Peabody is currently the eldest tribal member in the Southern Ute Tribe.

Vida B. Peabody: Eldest living Southern Ute recognized

A National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Grant was awarded to the Southern Ute Culture Center and Museum. This grant provided the staff with hands-on training for collections care and how to make displays within conservation standards. Museum staff members Tim Ryder and Amy Young were also able to upgrade the way items are stored at the museum. This photo first appeared in theDecember 3, 2002, edition of the Southern Ute Drum.

Seniors share breakfast

Elders gather for Easter

Southern Ute Chairman Melvin Baker visits with tribal elder Georgia McKinley and her family during the March Sip, Chat and Chew event at the Multi-Purpose Facility on Friday, Mar. 11. This was the first Sip, Chat and Chew event that allowed in-person participation since last year.

Southern Ute tribal elder Connie Baker is designing the ribbon pattern for this skirt while attending the Ribbon Skirt Class at the Multi-Purpose Facility on Tuesday, March 8. Baker has been saving this material for some time, after choosing the ribbon pattern she will be ready to piece the garment together just in time for the spring and summer cultural activities.

Sewing ribbon skirts at MPF

SunUte Community Center Director, Robin Duffy-Wirth and Assistant Property and Facilities Manager, Kelsey Frost give a small tour to Multi-Purpose Facilities Operations Manager, Elise Redd on Friday, Dec. 17 to show a new installation of over 20 metal prints, which displays Southern Ute tribal history from the late 1800’s to present. In conjunction with SunUte’s 20th year anniversary celebration, the metal prints also detail the history of SunUte Community Center and importance of sports and exercise within the community.

Southern Ute Historic Preservation Officer, Garrett Briggs was among those who spoke to attendees at the ribbon cutting for the exhibit opening of Home | Land at the Denver Art Museum, Sunday, Oct. 24. In his remarks, Briggs thanked the Ute traditional knowledge holders — Cassandra Atencio, Elise Redd, and Helen Munoz, whom were involved in the project.
