The Southern Ute Veterans Association held a small, intimate ceremony for Memorial Day, on Monday, May 31, 2021 in the Southern Ute Veteran’s Memorial Park. Due to current COVID-restrictions – the larger ceremony that was traditionally held annually was scaled down significantly. The veterans raised and lowered flags to half-mast in recognition of those who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, prior to continuing the Memorial Day ceremony at the Bear Dance Bridge on the Pine River. The Veterans Association concluded the ceremony at the Ouray Memorial Cemetery. Honoring the Fallen Soldiers

The Southern Ute Indian Tribe is set to replace the aging bridge deck this fall, with repair crews onsite throughout much of October, possibly into November, depending on weather conditions. The bridge crosses the Pine River on La Boca Ranch Road and provides access to Indian Mesa, and sections of northern New Mexico to the south.

Wintertime willows

Students of the Southern Ute Indian Montessori Academy have the honor of dancing the first dance, a tradition at the Southern Ute Bear Dance and an integral part of the cultural component emphasized through the Montessori program. The young students spend weeks, if not months in preparation, often sewing their own moccasins and decorating their Bear Dance regalia together in the classroom.
