10 Years Ago: Southern Ute Royalty members braved the cold for this year’s Snowdown Light Parade the evening of Feb. 4, 2011 aboard a grand float that made its way down Main Avenue in Durango. The annual procession is the high point of the weeklong celebration, which encourages residents to come out and mingle despite the weather. Miss Southern Ute First Alternate Sage Rohde mixes in with the crowd as the floats are finalized and the excitement builds for the parade. This photo was first published in the Feb. 11, 2011, issue of The Southern Ute Drum.

Youth Employment Program creates new opportunities

Stepping together in perfect cadence, men and women dancers move to the rhythm of the bear, as the four-day spring celebration came to a close on Monday, May 20, 2019.  Shockley won third place in feature photography for his coverage of the Ute Tribe’s spring Bear Dance.

Drum nets 6 awards from the Society of Professional Journalists 

20 years ago: People from across the country gathered in Colorado Springs on January 13, 2000 to help the Native American Sports Council honor Jim Thorpe. Among the celebrants (left to right) were Southern Ute Tribal Councilman Byron Red Sr., Billy Mills (10K Olympic Gold Medal Winner, Councilman Dewitte Baker, and Ross Anderson (Professional Speed Skier).
