Tribal Council serves up Pizza

Tribal Information Services’ Records Manager Shiri Howell, shoots her compound bow during the shoot and won first-place in the Women’s Compound category; Tribal Information Services’ Records Clerk Jack Frost III, looks to see where she landed her arrow. The San Juan College School of Energy welcomed Tribal Council to tour the facility and learn more about the programs that are available to students, Friday, Aug 5. The school also hosts numerous educational events throughout the year that provides students the hands on experience for career preparation.

Exploring energy at SJC

The Southern Ute Tribal Council spent the morning of Monday, May 9, touring the west side of the reservation with Tribal Planning and Lands staff, along with Archuleta County leadership and staff. The group began the tour at the Pagosa Junction Bridge, which is approximately 100 years old and in need of repair.

Lieutenant Deirryck Begay of the Southern Ute Police Department (SUPD) takes part in the walk while enroute to the Bear Trail. SUPD was vital in helping make sure that the event was safe, and traffic was directed accordingly.

Walking for hope

Tribal leadership from 14 tribes, including all three Ute Tribes, attended the Tribal Leader Forum. The group gathered to discuss tribal water rights along the Colorado River and the management of the river, Lake Powell, and Lake Mead. The lack of meaningful tribal consultation, both historically and present-day, remains a growing concern for Tribes.

Los Pinos Fire Protection District Board President, James Brown addresses the Board’s concern regarding growing costs of providing services and decrease in reserves. Tribal leadership acknowledged the benefit of local emergency services and faster response times, providing much needed expedited care and assistance in the community.

Southern Ute Vietnam Veteran and Association Commander, Howard Richards Sr. spoke to attendees at the Vietnam Veterans Day celebration on Tribal Campus, Tuesday, March 29. Richards served in the U.S. Army 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam.
