Southern Ute Tribal Planning acquires Kubota excavator

At the request of the Los Pinos Fire District and Deputy Chief of Operations, Jim Owens — Matthew Box and son, Noah Box performed a blessing on two fire engines recently brought into service for Los Pinos Fire District. Box explains the significance of a traditional blessing to the firefighters, prior to singing a Buffalo Song, Monday, Aug. 14.

Meet the Candidates Night

Construction Services Heavy Equipment Operator, Matthew Box works to fix a dirt road in Deep Canyon with the use of the 2022 Caterpillar 120 AWD motor grader purchased by the Tribal Planning Department. The project to fix the dirt roads in this rural area started in July and is expected to be completed by early fall.

Tribe releases bear cubs into the wilderness

10 Years Ago: Southern Ute Health Services hosted an Elders Health Education Conference at the MultiPurpose Facility on Friday, Sept. 16, 2011. In her opening remarks, Southern Ute Chairman Pearl E. Casias said “It’s a good gathering, an educational gathering to help our elders.” Health Services Manager Mirielle Begay also spoke. An honoring for the four oldest living tribal members – Eddie Box Sr., Anna Marie Scott, Annabelle Eagle, and Ute Mountain Ute elder Lea Salt – was among the day’s events.

The Executive Office announces new directors

Southern Ute elder, Eddie Box Jr., speaks with KSUT Tribal Radio Station Manager Sheila Nanaeto live in-studio, Monday, Oct. 19, which was simulcast on both KSUT Tribal radio and KSUT Four Corners Radio. Box said a prayer and gave a ‘virtual welcome.’ Box spoke briefly of the history of KSUT and thanked those involved in the process of getting KSUT into the new building - the Southern Ute Tribe, KSUT staff, KSUT Board and the listeners. The new building bears his name as the Eddie Box Jr. Media Center.

Bear Dance: Honoring the bear, upholding tradition

10 Years Ago: On the cool, windy Friday morning of May 14, a group of about 150 walkers stretched and warmed up for what would be a 19-mile trek from the junction of Colorado Highways 160 and 491 to the Four Corners Monument. This was the 14th year of the Walking Together for Healthier Nations. Southern Ute Council Lady Marjorie Borst spoke of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Borst was one of the original organizers for the Southern Ute diabetes program and aided in the walk years ago.
