Spreading the Christmas spirit in Ignacio

The Southern Ute Social Services Department hosted a holiday get together for children and adults that are in their care, on Tuesday, Dec. 22. To celebrate the holiday season all guests were treated to lunch and a gift on behalf of the Social Services Department. Pictured: Velma Armijo from Social Services gives a gift to Jeremiah Nez.

The Colorado Commission of Indian Affairs held its last quarterly meeting of the year in Denver on Friday, Dec. 18. Representatives from multiple state agencies and council members the two Ute tribes were in attendance.

Education, offensive mascots among topics at Denver meeting

Josie Archuleta, retires from the Southern Ute Indian Tribe’s Permanent Fund, her official last day was Thursday, Dec. 17, where she worked as a custodian for 21 years. A reception was held in the Hall of Warriors – co-workers, friends and family wished her well. Archuleta plans to continue serving in the San Ignatius Catholic Church.

Archuleta retires after 20 years

The Southern Ute Christmas Program “Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” brought the holiday cheer to Ignacio, bringing the community together for the festivities. The program was held on Saturday, Dec. 19 at Sky Ute Casino, and featured performances from the Southern Ute Indian Montessori Academy, as well as a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

Coming together for Christmas

The Wildcats basketball team take time to welcome those in attendance to the local screening of ‘The Ridiculous Six’, an Adam Sandler movie in which Ignacio teen Bird Red (in front) was an extra in the movie. The screening served as a fundraiser for the Wildcats basketball team on Friday, Dec. 11 in the Ignacio High School Performing Arts Center.

‘The Ridiculous Six’ gets local screening

Leonard C. Burch’s family members stand with two winners of the Leonard C. Burch Day Literacy & Art contest, 1st place winner in the 2nd grade category, Derek Sage (center) and 1st place in the 4th and 5th grade literacy category, Tamarius Roland (to Derek’s left). The awards were presented to the Southern Ute Indian Montessori Academy students on Friday, Dec. 18 in the SunUte meeting room while other awards were presented in the Ignacio Schools respectively.

Bears broken by unrestrained Bobcats

Ignacio’s Carlos Herrera (30) launches a three-point attempt during boys’ C-team action December 17 at Dolores.  The Bobcats overcame a small 10-8 halftime deficit to tie the game at 18-18 after three quarters and 27-27 through four before ultimately losing the battle in overtime, 34-29.
