Ute relatives and friends gathered together in celebration of spring during this year’s Northern Ute Bear Dance held in Fort Duchesne, Utah. This year’s event was held Friday, May 13 through Monday, May 16. A Bear Dancer from the Ute Indian Tribe, Gavyn Vanderhoop, adjusts her hat, attempting to shade herself from the sun rays; temperatures reached the upper 80’s throughout the weekend.

White Mesa closes Bear Dance

Ancestral Puebloan sites are prevalent throughout Cedar Mesa and the surrounding canyons. One of the best-preserved archeological sites being Moon House Ruin in McCloyd Canyon, a permit system is now in place to help regulate the number of daily visitors and protect the cliff dwellings for future generations.
