Statement on the Department of Interior’s Indian Boarding School Report

Tribal leadership from 14 tribes, including all three Ute Tribes, attended the Tribal Leader Forum. The group gathered to discuss tribal water rights along the Colorado River and the management of the river, Lake Powell, and Lake Mead. The lack of meaningful tribal consultation, both historically and present-day, remains a growing concern for Tribes.

Southern Ute Chairman Melvin J. Baker testified before the House Committee on Natural Resources hearing titled, “Examining the History of Federal Lands and the Development of Tribal Co-Management” Tuesday, March 8. Tribal members can view the hearing on YouTube by searching the hearing title.

Frequently scheduled meetings between Tribal Council and the Ignacio School Board help to strengthen the relationship between the Tribe and the Ignacio School District.  The quarterly meeting between the Tribe and the school district was held Tuesday, Nov 16. was attended by Southern Ute Education Director LaTitia Taylor and the District’s Curriculum Director.

Tribal Council attends Ignacio School Board meeting

Hunters from the Pueblo of Laguna spent a week on the Southern Ute Indian Reservation to take part in an approved cultural hunt. The visitors also brought with them baked goodies from home which were distributed to Southern Ute tribal elders.

Laguna Cultural Hunts

Chairman Melvin Baker joined members of the Tribal Council and Sunshine Cloud Smith Youth Advisory Council to pass out the 2021 Bear Dance Feast. Due to COVID-19, the to-go style meals were pre-packaged and distributed to tribal elders, tribal members and the community in attendance.
