Easter hops back into Ignacio

10 Years Ago: Pearl E. Casias made history April 13, 2011, when she was sworn in as the Southern Ute Indian Tribe’s chairwoman, becoming the first woman ever to take the reins and lead the Tribe. She quickly named Councilman Mike Olguin her vice chairman and Andrew Frost her executive officer. Ute Mountain Ute Chairman Gary Hayes was present to honor Casias with a blanket and be the first tribal leader to shake her hand as chairwoman.

Many Moons Ago

The Southern Ute Indian Montessori Academy celebrated the Easter holiday on Friday, April 19. Southern Ute elder Ramona Eagle and SUIMA student Cassius Harlan watched as his father, Stais Harlan, counted how many eggs were in his basket. Students and their families gathered for an Easter egg hunt on SUIMA grounds for younger students and at SunUte Park for older students. Parents and grandparents were encouraged to participate in helping find Easter eggs alongside the youngest of participants.
