10 Years Ago: Southern Ute Health Services hosted an Elders Health Education Conference at the MultiPurpose Facility on Friday, Sept. 16, 2011. In her opening remarks, Southern Ute Chairman Pearl E. Casias said “It’s a good gathering, an educational gathering to help our elders.” Health Services Manager Mirielle Begay also spoke. An honoring for the four oldest living tribal members – Eddie Box Sr., Anna Marie Scott, Annabelle Eagle, and Ute Mountain Ute elder Lea Salt – was among the day’s events.

10 Years Ago: Head dancers make their way into the arena, bringing out the Eagle Staff, as the Gathering of Nations Powwow returns to the University of New Mexico’s “Pit” for the 28th annual event from April 28 – 30, 2011 in Albuquerque, NM. The Gathering of Nations attracts tens of thousands of participants and spectators from around the world, including members from more than 500 tribes in the Unites States and Canada.

10 Years Ago: The chairmen of the three Ute tribes sign off on Tri-Ute Council bylaws during the council’s meeting on Sept. 23, 2010 in Ignacio. From left to right, Nothern Ute Chairman Curtis Cesspooch, Southern Ute Chairman Matthew J. Box, and Ute Mountain Ute Chairman Ernest House Sr. make the council official with the signing of the document, legitimizing its future and past efforts, which have included, among other things authorizing the annual Tri-Ute Games.

10 Years Ago: Alaskan Native Jennifer Bennis was crowned Miss Hozhoni 2010-2011 on March 27 during the 46th annual Hozhoni Days PowWow, a two-day event capping off a week of cultural celebrations at Fort Lewis College in Durango. Emotions ran high as the reigning Miss Hozhoni, Seratha Largie, passed on her title and gave a welcoming embrace to Bennis, her successor. Bennis is a Fort Lewis college student from Dillingham, Alaska, and an Alaskan Native of the Curyung Tribe.

30 Years Ago: The Southern Ute Youth Group proudly displays their first place blue ribbon they won at the Cultural Heritage Festival in Farmington on Oct. 9 and 10. The members who participated were L-R: Sheila Ryder, Eddie Box Jr., Betty Box, Benito Casias, JoGenia Red and in front Sarah Hudson. Other youth group members not pictured were Joe Mayokok, Bertha Box, Snow Bird Box, and Eddie Box Sr. Part of the group who did not participate were Sadie Frost, Theodosha Frost, Rhonda Frost, Toniette Baca.
