Miss Southern Ute, Maleina Carel rides in full regalia on a horse named “Gigi” during the annual Horse & Rider Parade, accompanied by equine handler, Tatum Bebo. The parade takes place outdoors at EXPO New Mexico each year as part of the Gathering of Nations Powwow. The event draws dozens of horses and riders in traditional Native regalia, showcasing horsemanship skills and elaborate beadwork.

Gracing Albuquerque, N.M. in its 42nd year, the Gathering of Nations Powwow returned to EXPO New Mexico this past weekend. The annual gathering highlights cultural resilience and Native American self-determination drawing participants from across the United States and Canada, including members of the Southern Ute, Ute Mountain Ute and Ute Indian Tribes. The multi-day event culminated on Saturday night with the crowning of Miss Indian World, Dania Wahwasuck of Prairie Band Potawatomi Thunder Clan from Mayetta, Kan.
