Veterans celebrate Day of Remembrance














The Southern Ute Veterans Association held their annual Memorial Day services, the Day of Remembrance on Monday, May 26 in the Southern Ute Veterans Memorial Park in Ignacio, Colo. Raymond Baker, Secretary of the Association was this year’s Master of Ceremonies. Guest speakers included Southern Ute Chairman, Melvin J. Baker; Major Larry Campos (Army retired); Ute Mountain Ute Councilman, Conrad Jacket and Fort Garland Museum & Cultural Center Director, Eric Carpio. Marlena Valdez sang the National Anthem, which she has been doing since she was in high school. The flag carriers and the attendees walked from the Veterans Memorial Park down to the Bear Dance Bridge that overlooks the Pine River. Terry Knight Sr. offered a wreath for the fallen soldiers who were lost at sea. Ceremonies concluded at the Ouray Memorial Cemetary with Taps, Flag and Honor Songs, 21-gun salute and wreath presentations.
