The Southern Ute Tribal Council appointed Council Member James M. “Mike” Olguin as Tribal Treasurer, Tuesday, Jan 14. Olguin brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as Treasurer previously and serving over 40 years within the Tribe. His in-depth knowledge of Tribal finances and his dedication to the Southern Ute Tribal membership make him a great fit for the position.

“I am honored to be selected by Tribal Council to serve as Treasurer once again,” Olguin said. “I am committed to ensuring the sound financial management of the Tribe’s resources and working collaboratively with leadership to advance the well-being of our people.”

In this role, Treasurer Olguin will be responsible for:

  • Safeguarding Tribal Funds: Accepting, receipting, and securely storing all Tribal funds, ensuring their deposit in federally insured banks or individual accounts as directed by the Tribal Council.
  • Maintaining Accurate Records: Keeping meticulous records of all Tribal funds received and disbursed.
  • Authorizing Disbursements: Approving or authorizing the release of funds only as outlined in the approved annual budget or with specific authorization from the Tribal Council.

Reporting on Financial Matters: Providing regular reports to the Tribal Council on all receipts, expenditures, and the status of Tribal funds.

“Council Member Olguin’s decades of leadership within our Tribe, coupled with his previous service as Treasurer, provide him with a unique understanding of our financial needs,” said Southern Ute Chairman, Melvin J. Baker. “We are confident in his ability to effectively manage our resources and ensure a prosperous future for our Tribe.”
