Sophomore Avionne Gomez exploded for a career-high 32 points to lead the Johnson & Wales University women’s basketball team to a 58-54 road win over Centenary College on Monday.

Gomez caught fire from deep, going 7-of-11 from the 3-point line to lead the Wildcats (1-8, 1-3) to their first victory of the season. Gomez’s performance was just the third 30-point game by an SCAC player this season.

Sophomore Brianna Bailey finished with 12 points and two steals and classmate Katey Guzman added nine points, 11 rebounds and four assists for JWU. Freshman Kaleya Corke chipped in eight boards.

With her team trailing by a point with 4:21 to play, Gomez knocked down her seventh 3 of the game to give the Wildcats a 49-47 lead. Gomez made a jumper shortly after to extend the Wildcats’ lead to five, and the visitors never trailed the rest of the way.

The Wildcats totaled seven steals as a team, including three by senior Salma Oros and two by Bailey.

Johnson & Wales University returns home to host the University of Dallas on Friday, Jan. 4 at the Wildcat Center in Denver.
