Wrestling schedule’s first draft released

Ignacio junior, 152-pounder, Dustin Sanchez attempts to pin Stratton senior, Dayne Hines during the weight’s fifth-place match, Feb. 17 at the CHSAA Class 2A State Championships in Denver. Unfortunately, a fall was not signaled, and Sanchez finished the season in sixth place.

Grapplers host, grab 11th at Melton Memorial

Wray’s Carlos Tarin tries resisting Ignacio’s Lorenzo Pena with whatever breath he’s got left as Pena applies a decisive squeeze during the Class 2A, 160-pound division’s third-place match, Feb. 18 inside Pepsi Center in Denver. Tarin somehow did avoid being pinned, but with Pena recording multiple near-falls, the Bobcat senior easily defeated the Eagle sophomore by 14-3 major decision. Pena finished his last season with a 37-5 record, and IHS finished 16th in the team standings despite having only three entrants.

Seen before a match inside Pepsi Center last season, Ignacio senior Lorenzo Pena (right) and head coach Jordan Larsen will return again the weekend of Feb. 16-18, 2017, to seek a State Championship. Pena will compete at 160 pounds.
