Lady ’Cats Valdez, Nanaeto off to State

Charlize Valdez (5) begins the final hill with nothing but open air ahead of her Friday afternoon, Aug. 23, at Dolores High’s inaugural Boggy Draw Bear Chase.  Also, a volleyball player for IHS, Valdez earned the young Lady Bobcat program’s first-ever individual title at the meet.

IHS harriers make history at first 2019 meet

As the Lafayette-based Peak to Peak Pumas plan strategy, Ignacio High School juniors Elco Garcia, Jr. (25), and Jonas Nanaeto (26) – both running in 2018 for nearby Bayfield – practice their tandem takeoff prior to the CHSAA State Cross-Country Championships’ opening Class 3A boys’ race Saturday morning, Oct. 27, in Colorado Springs.  (Peak to Peak, coincidentally, would ultimately win the team title.)

Nanaeto cracks top-50 at State Cross-Country

Flanked by father Travis (left) and mother Sheila (right), Ignacio High Schoolers Avaleena and Jonas Nanaeto will both be competing at the CHSAA Cross-Country State Championships in Colorado Springs, Oct. 27. Avaleena will run for IHS in the Class 2A girls’ race, while Jonas (as well as fellow IHS athlete Elco Garcia, Jr.) will run in the 3A boys’ feature, being part of Bayfield High’s roster.

Girls from all three local cross-country teams: Ignacio, Bayfield and Durango,  jostle for position at the start of the Bayfield Cross Country Invitational, held Saturday, Sept. 22.
