The Southern Ute Indian Tribe proudly announces the reaffirmation of its AAA credit rating by Fitch Ratings (Fitch) and S&P Global Ratings (S&P), a global benchmark for financial evaluation. Since 2001, the Tribe has consistently earned this top-tier rating, a testament to its fiscal responsibility and its proven ability to weather national and global economic fluctuations while maintaining a strong financial foundation.

S&P and Fitch are two of the world’s leading credit rating agencies, both assessing the creditworthiness of entities like corporations and governments. While their core function is identical – assigning ratings that reflect the likelihood of debt repayment – they operate independently. A high credit rating signifies lower risk for investors and lenders. The AAA assessment underscores the Tribe’s disciplined financial management and its capacity to meet its obligations, placing the Tribe in an exclusive category. This distinction is held by no other Tribe. This achievement demonstrates a level of financial stability that surpasses many governments and leading corporations, which is important because it allows the Tribe to secure favorable terms on loans and investments, supporting long-term economic development.

“This rating is more than just a letter on a financial report, it is a symbol of our dedication to the generations that came before us and those yet to come. It signifies that we can continue to build upon their legacy, invest in our community, and grow sustainably, ensuring prosperity for future generations. It is about safeguarding our future and honoring our past,” Chairman Melvin J. Baker said.

“Preserving a AAA rating demands a continuous commitment to superior financial stewardship. It is not a one-time accomplishment, but an ongoing process that requires constant vigilance and adaptation,” said Treasurer James M. Olguin. “We must remain proactive in our financial planning, anticipate potential challenges, and maintain the highest standards of accountability. In addition, the people of the Tribe are proud of this standing as we have always been rated higher than the U.S. Government.”

The Southern Ute Indian Tribe celebrates this significant achievement and remains steadfast in its dedication to upholding the highest standards of financial governance and sustainable economic practices.
