A salute to Vietnam Veterans

Southern Ute Vietnam Combat Veteran, Ronnie C. Baker (Army) performed “Taps” to conclude the formal Vietnam Veterans Day memorial on Friday, March 29 at the Southern Ute Veterans Park. The event brought local veterans, families, and tribal dignitaries together for a day of remembrance for all those who fought in the Vietnam War. Baker served in the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army during the war.

Little Miss Southern Ute, Shayne White Thunder carries the military burial flag for her grandfather Vietnam combat veteran, Ross Denny. Denny was a member of the Southern Ute Veterans Association and like other members of the association, his family received recognition during the event.
Southern Ute Veterans Association Commander, Howard D. Richards Sr. reflects on his time serving in the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam from Jan.1 to Aug. 16 of 1969. Richards also took time to recognize all current and past members of the Southern Ute Veterans Association who fought in the Vietnam War.

The Southern Ute Veterans Association hosted the formal Vietnam Veterans Day on Friday, March 29 at the Southern Ute Veterans Park. Southern Ute Veterans Association Commander, Howard D. Richards Sr. and Vietnam Combat Veteran Rod Grove served as the emcees for this year’s event. Beginning with an invocation by Terry Knight, the event proceeded with performance of the national anthem by Marlena Valdez, honor songs by Yellow Jacket Singers, and closed with a presentation of “Taps” by Southern Ute Vietnam Veteran Ronnie C. Baker. The event brought local veterans, families, and tribal dignitaries together for this day of recognition and remembrance.
