Education Students of the Month

SU Student of the Season – Harley Joy

My name is Harley Joy, and I have been nominated for Southern Ute Student of the Season for Spring 2025. I have been nominated by Southern Ute Education Department teacher Kelly Fiddler. I attend Ignacio Elementary School where I am in fifth grade, my parent is Angela Herrera.

I enjoy learning and being with my friends at school. My favorite subject is art because I can make cool art and be with my friend. My positive role model is my mom because she teaches me to be kind and make good decisions. When I grow up, I am not sure what I want to be yet, but I know that I want to help save people in some way.

Southern Ute Education Department teacher Kelly Fiddler shared, “It is my honor to be a part of a team who nominated Harley Joy as the Southern Ute Student of the Season. Harley works very hard in school and at tutoring within the Education Department and his efforts have paid off. I believe that his academic success will lead him to a very bright future. Not only is Harley a hard-working and successful young man, but he is also a gentle soul, and he is kind to everyone,” Fiddler said. “This level of compassion that he holds is unique and is recognized by all, thank you to Harley for setting such a high standard for all of us to follow – you are a true inspiration.”

Ignacio Elementary Teachers, Mrs. Davis, Ms. Young, and Ms. Stephens share their pride in Harley’s achievement, “It is with great excitement that we announce Harley Joy as the recipient of the fifth grade Southern Ute Student of the Season. Throughout this year, Harley has consistently demonstrated outstanding qualities that make him a true role model for his peers. His dedication to academic excellence is evident by the time, energy and effort he put into all of his work. Beyond his scholastic achievements, Harley is a true six pillar Bobcat.”

The teachers said, “Harley has shown a commitment to helping others by helping classmates with their work, especially those who are struggling, demonstrating patience and a genuine desire to see everyone succeed. It was a challenge selecting a Southern Ute Student of the Season, but Harley stood out amongst a pool of many talented and deserving students. His positive attitude, strong work ethic, and genuine care for others make him a truly exceptional member of our community. We are incredibly proud of Harley’s accomplishments and the positive impact he has had on our community, we believe he will achieve great things in the future.”

Harley’s mom shared, “Harley is an amazing young man who has overcome many obstacles over the past few years and always comes out on top. He is kindhearted, silly, and always thinking of others over himself. Harley loves reading, science, art and learning new things. Harley, my son, I am so proud of the person that you are, your eagerness and drive inspires us all. Keeping reaching for the stars and show the world that you are unstoppable, I love you always and forever.”
