Ignacio Middle School wrestler Ambrose Valdez, competing at a listed 144 pounds, glances up in hopes of hearing the referee call a pin during his bout against Pagosa Springs’ Chance Hart during the Bobcats’ March 3 home triangular, which also welcomed Durango’s Miller Middle School. Valdez’s stick became official 1:22 into the second of three 1:30-length periods, but the Pirates would best IMS by an unofficial 54-26 count after 15 total bouts. Following a trip to the 3/7 PSMS Invitational, the ’Cats were to host another tri on March 10 (results unavailable at press time), then attack the Cortez-hosted league championships on the 14th.
Ignacio Middle School wrestler Marcus Maez, competing at a listed 80 pounds, goes for a third-period pin of Pagosa Springs’ Creede Dozier during the Bobcats’ March 3 home triangular, which also welcomed Durango’s Miller Middle School. In a 15-bout dual with weights ranging from 70 to 200, PSMS unofficially defeated IMS 54-26. Ignacio Middle School wrestler Devonte Montoya, competing at a listed 90 pounds, attempts to pin Durango-based Miller Middle’s Lance Baker during a March 3 home triangular, which also welcomed Pagosa Springs. On the mat for a second time during the dual – he’d lost 6-3 to Angel Cole Pontine – Montoya made the stick official during the third and final 90-second period. Were all 12 contested bouts considered for team scoring purposes, the IMS-MMS dual would have actually ended in a 30-30 tie (Montoya’s win, in fact, had forged the first deadlock at 12-12). Following a trip to the 3/7 PSMS Invitational, the ’Cats were to host another tri on March 10 (results unavailable at press time), then attack the Cortez-hosted league championships on the 14th.
Ignacio Middle School wrestler Asher Gallegos, competing at a listed 110 pounds, attempts to twist and flop Durango-based Miller Middle’s Wyatt Bartel onto his back during a March 3 home triangular, which also welcomed Pagosa Springs. Gallegos would unfortunately lose by pin in the second of three 90-second periods, but the Bobcats would, if all 12 contested bouts were considered for team scoring purposes, actually tie the Angels 30-30 after all was said and done. Following a trip to the 3/7 PSMS Invitational, the ’Cats were to host another tri on March 10 (results unavailable at press time), then attack the Cortez-hosted league championships on the 14th.
Ignacio Middle School’s Kyle Rima, competing at a listed 200 pounds, applies pinning pressure to Montezuma-Cortez Middle’s Karston Cox during the Bobcats’ March 10 home triangular, which also welcomed Bayfield. Rima’s pin became official during the first of three 90-second periods, but the Panthers would win the 10-bout dual by an unofficial 35-21 margin. MCMS would then edge BMS 39-35 after 14 bouts to unofficially place first at the event. Bayfield followed in second place by rallying past Ignacio 58-48 in a 21-bout feature. Up next, the ’Cats will compete at the MCMS-hosted league championships Saturday, March 14.
Ignacio Middle School’s Devonte Montoya, competing at a listed 90 pounds, prepares to claim victory over Bayfield Middle’s Darren Boling during the Bobcats’ March 10 home triangular, which also welcomed Montezuma-Cortez. Montoya would indeed win by pin, but the Wolverines would later erase a 36-6 deficit in the 21-bout dual to win by an unofficial 58-48 margin. An unofficial 35-21 loss to MCMS in the afternoon’s opening 10-bout dual would leave IMS in third place for the day. Up next, the ’Cats will compete at the MCMS-hosted league championships Saturday, March 14.
Ignacio Middle School’s Phoenix Tarver, competing at a listed 125 pounds, resists the escape attempt of Bayfield Middle’s Nico Carvajal during the Bobcats’ March 10 home triangular, which also welcomed Montezuma-Cortez. Tarver would prevail by pin, giving IMS an unofficial 30-6 advantage in the 21-bout dual, but the Wolverines would rally late to win 58-48. An unofficial 35-21 loss to MCMS in the afternoon’s opening 10-bout dual would leave IMS in third place for the day. Up next, the ’Cats will compete at the MCMS-hosted league championships Saturday, March 14.
Ignacio Middle School’s Trajan Garcia, competing at a listed 185 pounds, listens for the referee’s pin-signaling mat slap as he works atop Bayfield Middle’s Ryan Rodgers during the Bobcats’ March 10 home triangular, which also welcomed Montezuma-Cortez. Garcia won by pin, increasing IMS’ advantage in the 21-bout dual to an unofficial 42-12, but the Wolverines would rally late to win 58-48. An unofficial 35-21 loss to MCMS in the afternoon’s opening 10-bout dual would leave IMS in third place for the day.
