The stage has been set August 30 for the 2016 Southern Ute Royalty Pageant. In preparation for the event the Royalty Committee held its last Royalty Workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 16 to provide pageant information and guidance to prospective contestants.

Contestants will be competing to represent the tribe as the next Miss, Jr. Miss and Little Miss Southern Ute as well as Southern Ute Brave.

During the pageant, contestants will showcase their talents, dancing skills and knowledge of the tribe and its history and culture. Contestants ages 5 to 25 will be broken into their respective groups based on age. Five to nine-year old girls will be competing for Little Miss Southern Ute, 10-15 girls will be competing for Jr. Miss, and 16 to 25 competing for Miss Southern Ute. Males 5 to 15 will compete for Southern Ute Brave.

The pageant is still open for registration for tribal members who wish to run for a title. Applications are available at the Southern Ute Culture Department and must be submitted back to the Culture Department by 5 p.m. on the day of the pageant – August 30. The pageant is slated to begin at 6 p.m. at the Multi-Purpose Facility.

The Royalty Committee is calling on the tribal community to encourage their young family and friends to try out for a title. There has been low turnout the past couple years and the committee is hoping to fill all positions for 2016-2017. The tribal community is welcome to come and cheer on the royalty hopefuls.

The winners of the pageant will be crowned on the first night of the Southern Ute Tribal Fair Powwow – Friday, September 9, 2016.
