Students from the Southern Ute Indian Academy watched as Southern Ute Veterans Ronnie C. Baker and Roderick Grove conducted a flag lowering ceremony at the Academy on the morning of Jan. 5th. The flag lowering was in response to a proclamation by President George W. Bush calling for the nation’s flag to be flown at half-staff until January 8th to remember the victims of the Dec. 26th earthquake and tsunamis in the Indian Ocean region, a calamity that claimed tens of thousands of lives, including those of many children. President Bush’s proclamation concluded, “As the people of this devastated region struggle to recover, we offer our love and compassion, and our assurance that America will be there to help.”
