Steady outlook for the year ahead
The Southern Ute Growth Fund hosted its annual in-person and virtual General Membership Meeting for Tribal Membership on Thursday, Sept. 17, at the Sky Ute Casino Resort Event Center. The meeting provided an update on the Tribe’s business activities, highlighted strategic progress across Growth Fund entities, and offered a thoughtful forecast for the year ahead.
Tribal Members also had the opportunity to ask questions following the presentations, providing additional clarity around current-year accomplishments, emerging priorities, and the broader business environment.
Chairman Christine Sage and members of Tribal Council were also in attendance. Leadership provided opening remarks and recognized the Growth Fund’s continued progress while welcoming attendees to the meeting.
High-level meeting highlights included:
- A continued focus on long-term stability, responsible growth, and thoughtful diversification across the Growth Fund portfolio.
- Recognition of the Tribe’s historic Tribal Energy Resource Agreement (TERA), a milestone that supports Tribal sovereignty, responsible energy development, and greater self-determination.
- Ongoing investment in Tribal Member employment, advancement opportunities, internships, trainee programs, and leadership development.
- A strong commitment to worker safety, environmental stewardship, and cultural awareness across Growth Fund operations.
- Progress on community-serving priorities, including housing, utilities, fairgrounds improvements, and outreach efforts that support Tribal Members and the broader community.
- A forward-looking approach centered on listening, learning, collaboration, and preparing the organization to navigate changing economic and global conditions.
Shane Seibel, Executive Director of the Growth Fund, provided a comprehensive overview of the entity’s current state at a macro level and introduced members of the Growth Fund Management Committee (GFMC) and the Growth Fund’s business entities. He also discussed his vision and mission, highlighting their alignment with the mission and vision of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe.
“My vision and goal as Executive Director of the Growth Fund have remained steady: to focus on responsible growth, maximize Tribal Member equity, and help pave the way for future generations while honoring the balance between economic opportunity, environmental stewardship, and the cultural values that guide the Southern Ute Indian Tribe,” said Shane Seibel, Executive Director of the Southern Ute Growth Fund. “We continue to diligently work to expand and diversify our investments while creating meaningful opportunities for Tribal Member advancement and ensuring our decisions reflect a commitment to protecting the environment and respecting the Tribe’s cultural foundation,” he added.
Despite volatility in global markets, changing energy dynamics, and broader economic uncertainty, the Growth Fund remains well positioned through disciplined planning, prudent management, and a long-term focus on diversification. While leadership remains optimistic about future opportunities, the outlook is intentionally measured, recognizing that global conditions require the organization to stay flexible, strategic, and prepared.
The Growth Fund also reported continued success in employee safety and training. Safety and environmental stewardship remain high priorities across all entities, with the Safety and Environmental Compliance Management Group (SECMG) completing 14 Environmental and Health Safety reviews and audits in the last year, along with numerous safety trainings, including defensive driving and First Aid/CPR courses.
Red Willow Production Company also completed one year without a recordable injury, and the Growth Fund as a whole continues to maintain a lower injury incident rate than national averages.
As the Growth Fund continues to evaluate opportunities beyond traditional oil and gas revenue, leadership emphasized the importance of pursuing projects and partnerships that are financially sound, strategically aligned, and responsive to evolving market conditions. “As we look ahead, our focus remains on strengthening our businesses, preparing for change, and pursuing opportunities that support long-term stability for the Tribe,” said Shane Seibel. “My approach is to ask all the hard questions. Maintaining discipline and a strategic approach in our business plans is essential for setting a clear direction for our ventures,” he emphasized.
The Financial and Business Plans continue to guide the Growth Fund’s long-term approach to responsible growth, diversification, and sustainable support for the Tribe and its Membership. While current global conditions call for caution, the Growth Fund remains focused on thoughtful decision-making, strong stewardship, and opportunities that support long-term prosperity.
The meeting was recorded in full and is expected to be posted online to the Tribal Member Experience (TMX) portal in the coming weeks.
