Avalino Calabaza, (Army) from Santa Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico spoke to those in attendance about his tour of duty in Vietnam. Calabaza served in the same unit as Southern Ute elder, Tim Watts (Army) while in Vietnam.

Memorial Day: Day of Remembrance


Honoring fallen warriors on Memorial Day

The Southern Ute Veterans Association in cooperation with the Southern Ute Indian Tribe held their annual Memorial Day services, the Day of Remembrance on Monday, May 27 in the Southern Ute Veterans Memorial Park. Master of Ceremonies – Howard Richards Sr. (Army). Richards a Vietnam combat veteran took the helm, guiding the annual ceremony, flag and honor songs were sung by Red Spirit and Yellow Jacket. Marlena Valdez, a mainstay at the annual ceremony sung the National Anthem. Guest speakers were introduced by Rod Grove, included, Melvin Baker, Southern Ute Chairman, Manuel Heart, Ute Mountain Ute Chairman, Ron Fogleman (USAF retired) a four-star General, 15 Chief of Staff USAF, Avalino Calabaza (Army), and major Larry Campos (Army retired). Each were presented a custom blanket designed specifically for veterans. A special recognition was given to Tim Watts (Army) 101st Airborne, and Roland Norris (Army) 82nd Airborne, 105th Echo Company, both who were injured in action. The ceremony continued to the Bear Dance Bridge overlooking the Pine River, Terry Knight Sr., offered a wreath into the Pine River for those lost at sea. The ceremonies concluded at the Ouray Memorial Cemetery, with wreath presentation, TAPS, and a 21-gun salute.
