Bobcats 14th in Colorado Springs

Crane leads Ignacio at State Championships 

Not quite yet in the full heat of the day, but in conditions much warmer than at the start of competition Saturday morning, Nov. 1, the Ignacio Bobcats ran to a 14th-place team finish in the 2025 CHSAA State Cross-Country Championships’ Class 2A Boys feature. 

Never separated by much, senior Trace Crane (18:02.2) and junior Thunder Windy Boy (18:09.5) led the way and placed 38th, and 42nd respectively on the Norris-Penrose Event Center course.  Senior James Martin (19:27.0) ended up 98th and freshman Matthew Maestas (21:02.0) 135th as IHS accumulated an adjusted score-4 total of 236 points – bettering Rocky Ford (253), Leadville-based Lake County (253), Rye (255), Olathe (278), Rangely (288) and Bailey Platte Canyon (315). 

Despite not having a top-five placer in Colorado Springs, Golden View Classical Academy ended up with a winning low of 30 points.  Springs-based Thomas MacLaren School – also lacking a top-five finisher – came in second with 34, and Arvada Forge Christian (41) took third, paced by junior Titus Kammerlohr’s fifth-place 16:55.6. 

Fourth place individually went to Rye senior David Maroney (16:39.7) and third to Highlands Ranch SkyView Academy junior Rylan Griffith (16:36.0).  The top two runners, however, were separated by hardly a hundredth of a second, with Colorado Springs St. Mary’s sophomore Ethan Kiptui’s 16:20.1 ultimately besting Oak Creek Soroco senior Nick Clark’s. 

For Ignacio, Maestas actually ended up running alongside junior Judah Ashley, who placed 136th in 21:04.5.  Freshman Kanoa Thompson ended up 145th in 24:54.1.
