Lady ’Cats struggle at Alamosa, Monte

Senior DaLaney Wesner scored eight points Saturday afternoon, Feb. 1, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Lady Bobcats from losing 41-20 at Monte Vista.

Senior Marissa Olguin and junior Alyssa Atencio each registered four points, but both were blanked after the first quarter. Which actually went well for Ignacio; the 3A Lady ’Cats battled 3A MVHS to a 14-14 draw through eight minutes, only to then manage just six points during the following 24 in slipping to 6-10 overall and 2-4 in 3A/4A Intermountain League action.

Senior Victoria Brown and junior Juliann Avila each recorded one basket in the loss, which didn’t really appear the likely outcome until the third quarter; neither side had mustered much during the second – the Lady Pirates went into halftime leading 16-14 – but Monte Vista then took the third by a 10-4 margin, pressuring the visitors to produce in the final frame.

Making three three-pointers, MVHS junior guard Heysenny Beltran finished with a game-high 17 points but was the only player in double figures. Senior Angeleigha Mora ended up with eight and senior Allessah Archuleta five.

Preparing to visit 4A Alamosa – which followed up its home win the previous evening over IHS by blasting non-league 4A Lamar 56-12 the next day – on the 4th by booking their third straight win, the Lady Pirates improved to 9-5 overall, 3-2 IML; AHS finished the weekend standing 11-5, 3-2.

Hosting the Lady ’Cats Friday, Jan. 31, Alamosa outscored Ignacio 11-1 during the first quarter and charged into halftime leading 25-5 en route to a 46-26 victory.

Sophomore Audrina Knorr scored 15 points to pace the Mean Moose, and sole senior Morgan Ortega scored six (plus distributed eight assists). Junior Aubrey Rothermich logged five points (plus seven rebounds) and sophomore Arreli Felix another five as ten of AHS’ 11 players receiving varsity minutes contributed at least a point.

Kept in check throughout the first half, Olguin then broke free for three treys and all her 11 points. Atencio ended up with five points (four after intermission), while Wesner and Avila each contributed four and sophomore Maliyah Martinez two.

The Lady Bobcats will next see action Saturday, Feb. 8, at 4A Pagosa Springs (12-4, 6-0 IML as of press time), then host 3A Bayfield on the 13th and 3A Centauri on the 14th as league play intensifies.
