Hayes, Seibel go out winners at All-State

On the second of two competition days in Alamosa, graduated Ignacio guard Wyatt Hayes drained one final three-pointer and totaled nine points to help the Black Team easily defeat Red 78-61 in the 2016 Colorado High School Coaches Association All-State Boys’ Basketball Championship Game last Saturday.

2A Sanford’s deadly duo of guard Miles Caldon (19 points, five 3-pointers) and forward/center Chance Canty (13 points) also performed pretty much as expected, and helped the victorious squad—coached by IHS’ elated Chris Valdez and 1A Blanca Sierra Grande’s Matt Lucero—mount an imposing 35-19 lead after the first of two college-style halves inside Adams State University’s Plachy Hall and overcome the game-best 28 points put up by 4A Colorado Springs Mitchell’s Quincy Bryant, Jr.

Sinking three threes himself, 4A Fort Lupton’s Patrick Vasquez netted 13 in defeat for coaches Terry Dunn (4A Colorado Springs Sierra) and Scott Parker (3A Parachute Grand Valley), but 1A Dove Creek’s Jordan Ernst and local Clayton Brubacher of 3A AHS went scoreless while every Black member scored at least four.

Additionally, IHS’ graduated Ellie Seibel also ended her prep career on a high note, booking one three-pointer and five points total to help the All-State Girls’ Blue Team down the Red 82-68 in the day’s first finale.

Coached by 4A Longmont’s Mike Knaus and Bob Wiley, the Blues entered intermission leading 44-28, and would get a team-best 20 from 4A Highlands Ranch Valor Christian’s Heidi Hammond. 5A Highlands Ranch High School’s Symone Starks contributed 16 and 1A Akron’s Alexandria ‘A.J.’ Miller netted 14.

1A Mosca Sangre de Cristo’s Jenna McKinley pumped in 20 to pace the Reds, while 3A Sterling’s Jenna Knudson scored 15 and 2A Burlington’s Cheylin Corman 13.
