In his 2002 book, “Seeing with Fresh Eyes,” Edward Tufte examined the relationship between the eye, the brain and communication in insightful detail. One of the main points the author makes is that communication is a highly visual process and is most clearly shared with graphics. This is most relatable in great stories that use the written word to create visual images in our ‘minds eye’ to communicate their ideas. 

If this is true, then the goal of sharing information with the reader in this forum is even more challenging as we are not allowed the advantage of using graphics. 

But seeing with fresh eyes is also used in creative problem solving to get a new perspective to an ongoing situation. This can be done individually by taking a break or “sleeping on it,” but is most effective when people from outside are brought in to assess the scene.  

Recently I shared how the IdeaLab has been in the process of revising our strategic plan and working on a remodel of the makerspace. Several members of the community have shared their observations and given us some great ideas. With the addition of the Glowforge HD Pro laser printer we are excited to modify the space to be even more inviting and productive than ever before. 

And speaking of seeing with fresh eyes, I would like to share a comment from a visitor to our area. A young lady was peering in the door of the IdeaLab hesitant to cross the threshold. Noticing, I invited her in and after a short conversation found out she was a visitor from China. After a brief tour of the makerspace, I encouraged her to make use of the IdeaLab but she let me know, with a hint of regret, her visit was at an end. Then came the words I wish everyone in the community could hear. She said the people of Ignacio are fortunate to have the IdeaLab and the opportunities available to them there. I said surely, they had space such as these available to them in China? She said they do exist, but use is limited, and the makerspaces lack the open access that ours has.
