Southern Ute tribal members, first descendants, and JOM students worked to create decorations, costumes, and musical numbers during the Summer Art & Music Camp leading up to their performances. This camp served as an opportunity for Native students to explore music and express their artistic skills at the same time. This year’s theme is “Under the Sea” and students worked with art teacher, Lisa Brown and music teacher, Samatha Walker to paint decorations and create a dance-musical instrument performance.
The Southern Ute Education Department sponsored the Summer Art & Music Camp for rising first through fifth grade tribal students, held at the Ignacio Elementary School on Tuesday, June 3 through Thursday, June 5. Students spent three days creating art, dance routines and musical performances for their families. Students performed their “Under the Sea” art and music show on Thursday afternoon.
