From 1985 through 2019 there were several different uses for the restored site along Ute Road northeast of Ignacio. Initially there were Bureau of Indian Affairs office buildings in the area to the southwest of the current skate park. After these buildings were demolished, there was a transfer station in the area around the current ball field, with a potential road identified entering the restored site. A 2019 consulting report reviewed available historical aerial photography and it does not appear that industrial or large-scale disposal of wastes occurred within the restored site; instead, it appears that small-scale episodic dumping by unknown parties due to the nearby location of the historical waste transfer station. It is not evident when hazardous materials were brought into the restored site.
Remediation Description: After extensive planning, the Environmental Programs Department (EPD), Cottonwood Consulting and Emergency Environmental Services initiated remediation activities within the AOC (Area of Concern) project area on April 8, 2024. Remediation activities were completed on Monday, May 6 with the removal and proper disposal of an estimated 2,000,000 pounds of potentially hazardous materials and soil as well as an estimated 340,000 pounds of non-hazardous debris near the Los Pinos trailhead. In addition, a geofabric liner was installed to encapsulate any remaining materials, clean soil added and leveled, riprap placed on slopes to reinforce the geofabric and prevent erosion into wetland area, and area reseeded with an approved local grass mix.
The hiking trail and fishing access along the Los Pinos River was closed during remediation activities. With remediation activities now complete, the Tribal Council is proud to reopen the trailhead and riparian area for tribal members and the public to enjoy during their time on the beautiful Southern Ute Indian Reservation.
