Pine River Shares and Bear Smart Durango have teamed up again this year to present the 4th Annual Bayfield Area Community Fruit Harvest with activities and events taking place October 13-15 in the Pine River Valley. Community members are invited to join in the fun and productive activities from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. that include joining a gleaning team to harvest apples and/or dropping off donated apples, and helping to wash, sort and press apples into cider. On Saturday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., stop by for the Community Apple Share and free Community Cook Out as well as apple cider vinegar making demos, along with and free apples and mash and cider for all. Bring your favorite apple pie dessert of recipe.

Not only is the community fruit harvest a celebration of the rich and long agricultural heritage in the Pine River Valley, but it is also a proven strategy in reducing bear-human conflict. Bryan Peterson, Director of Bear Smart Durango offered, “Many residents think apples are a natural food for bears; they’re not. Apples are another human food source that brings bears near people, increasing the likelihood of something unfortunate happening. Removing that food source really helps in making our communities safer for both people and bears. And gleaning apples feeds the community! Win, win.”

Call Pine River Shares at 970-884-6040 if you have apples you have picked and would like to drop off for donation.
