Three feral horses pace around a pen in a Southern Ute corral on County Road 324 southeast of Ignacio on Wednesday, Sept. 25. The tribe’s Range Division has been working with Santa Fe, N.M.-based contractor Dan Elkins of Mt. Taylor Mustangs to capture the animals on the Southern Ute Reservation. Elkins brought in these three after luring them using a proprietary baiting system; a local rancher turned over another four he caught earlier this year. Range Division Head Jason Mietchen said there could be upwards of 100 still running free.
