Today, we’d like to remind you of two therapies we provide at the Southern Ute Behavioral Health building: DBT and AcuDetox.
Benefits of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is talk therapy (psychotherapy). It’s based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), but it’s specially adapted for people who experience emotions very intensely. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is talk therapy that helps people understand how thoughts affect feelings and behaviors. “Dialectical” means combining opposite ideas.
DBT focuses on assisting people to accept the reality of their lives and their behaviors and learn to change their lives, including their unhelpful behaviors. Dialectical behavior therapy was developed in the 1970s by American psychologist Marsha Linehan. DBT is a type of psychotherapy that helps people cope with emotional distress and regulate their emotions. Some of the benefits of DBT are:
- It is effective for treating and managing a wide range of mental health conditions, such as borderline personality disorder, self-harm, suicidal behavior, PTSD, substance use disorder, eating disorders, depression, and anxiety.
- It improves your relationships by teaching you how to communicate effectively, respect boundaries, and deal with conflicts.
- The skills you learn in DBT go beyond mental illness and can help you cope with stress, improve your self-esteem, and achieve your goals.
- It improves your quality of life by helping you find balance, acceptance, and meaning.

AcuDetox treatments heal mind and body
AcuDetox is a type of acupuncture that helps with trauma, stress, anxiety, PTSD, addictions, cravings, and overall well-being. It is clinically effective, cost-efficient, and drug-free. Combining acupuncture with counseling, education, medical support, and self-help groups is even more beneficial. Many clients report feeling more relaxed, less craving, more mental clarity, increased well-being, and more energy. Acudetox is unlike any other treatment in its ability to heal the mind and the body, bringing the two together in harmony.
Chinese acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to create a sense of unity and stillness. It has also been used for pain relief and to alleviate other ailments. Traditional acupuncture activates trigger points around the body with thin needles. The trigger points correspond to various organs and afflictions. Practitioners stimulate these points to realign energy flow and promote healing. Acudetox involves the activation of trigger points located around the ear.
The stimulation of each of these points contributes towards relaxation and pain relief. Acudetox patients report immediate feelings of calm and a lasting reduction in stress. You can easily find one of these acupuncture points yourself. Towards the top of the ear, you’ll find an oval-shaped dent. If you gently pinch this point between your thumb and forefinger, you will have seen the “Shen Men” point, also known as the “Spirit Gate.” There are four other points around the ear, known as the “Sympathetic,” the “Kidney,” the “Liver,” and the “Lung.” The beads applied pressure to the trigger point, creating a mild version of AcuDetox.
