Unlimited training offered for Southern Ute tribal members, elders

SunUte Community Center offers a variety of amenities to their members, while catering to people of all ages. The most popular amenities include the free personal training and the group exercise courses included in the membership. SunUte’s mission is to serve the tribal membership and surrounding communities with a safe and welcoming environment by offering quality customer service and knowledgeable staff. They continue to encourage tribal members to utilize the facility and wish to remind them of the additional benefits that tribal members receive.

“Ute Elders and their Friends” is a course recently added to the numerous group exercise classes offered; held on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week, elders can expect well-structured programming that will work on the entire body in a peaceful setting that will leave them feeling better than when they came in. Offering different exercises and weights, the elders can make the class perfect for their individual fitness levels. The elder class is a wonderful opportunity for elders to meet with a group and socialize while training with one of the trainers to gain strength, balance, and work on gaining back independence from any previous injuries that may limit them.

Fitness trainers, Jakob Box and Eliyah Lucero are passionate about fitness and encourage all members to begin their fitness journeys.  “My role as a SunUte trainer is to offer quality program design for either one on one clients or a group class that will meet goals and expectations for overall better health and wellness.” Trainer Jakob Box said in a recent interview.

“As a trainer at SunUte, my biggest role is to empower my clients in health and wellness. Helping to create a safe space on the fitness floor or in elder classes,” Lucero said. “Preventing and maintaining chronic illnesses is one of my biggest passions, as this is a huge epidemic within our Indigenous communities.”

SunUte Community Center has personal professional trainers available on site during regular business hours ready to aid everyone in achieving their fitness goals. The trainers work to develop personalized workout plans, maintain clean and orderly equipment, and most importantly prioritize safety within the gym. SunUte recently announced that tribal members now receive unlimited training sessions with their SunUte membership.

Box and Lucero share a piece of advice to those who are ready to begin their fitness journey. “My advice would be to simply just start making today the day, it can be a big or small step for some, but the first step is to make that decision to start today to learn and grow,” Box said. “We all start at different parts in our journey to help our bodies function to our best abilities and we as trainers are here every step of the way, so you never have to do it alone.”

“As they say, day one or one day. Like Jakob says, either a small or big step, as long as you start. It can be one mile a day or starting a strength training program,” Lucero said. “We are here to support and empower all tribal members, youth and elders!”
