National Prescription Take Back Day, Sept. 26, 2015

Dear Chief Ray Coriz:

I am writing to personally invite your agency to participate in what is one of the most successful ways to combat prescription drug abuse: The National Prescription Take-Back Day sponsored by the U.S. Justice Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), my office, and others. This event, scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2015, provides another opportunity for the public to safely dispose of their accumulated prescriptions. If your agency is already signed up to participate, I extend my sincere appreciation for your active involvement and community leadership in this public safety strategy.

In Colorado, good progress is being made to reduce the amount of unused prescription medications in households due to the combined efforts of multiple community and state-level partners. The success of past events is in no small part due to the cooperative efforts of state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies.

If your agency has not participated previously, I hope you will consider joining us for the collection drive on Saturday, September 26th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00p.m. We simply need your agency to provide a small number of personnel to collect the drugs from members of the community and place them in a container. DEA personnel will supply collection boxes and pick up the drugs shortly after the collection date.

Please sign up by contacting Dave Hagburg at the Denver Field Division of the DEA, david.s.hagburg@usdoj .gov. DEA will provide each participating law enforcement agency with posters, handout materials and boxes for the collection sites. Also visit www.dea.gov for additional information and to access the Partnership Toolbox.
