SUIMA news & upcoming events

October is flying by at the Southern Ute Indian Montessori Academy (SUIMA) it has been filled with exciting learning experiences, community connections, and memorable adventures for students of all ages.

Our Elementary students recently completed a study on the traditional healing uses of the hot springs found throughout our region. To bring their learning to life, students traveled to Durango Hot Springs, where they experienced the warm mineral waters firsthand. During their visit, they discussed the different minerals found in the springs, explored their significance, and reflected on how our ancestors utilized hot springs for healing and wellness.

Our Primary, Toddler, and Infant classrooms have been busy learning all about pumpkins and the many ways they can be used. As part of their studies, students, teachers, and families enjoyed a special trip to Holiday Farms Pumpkin Patch in Bloomfield, New Mexico. The outing provided a wonderful opportunity for hands-on learning and family engagement. Students enjoyed exploring the farm, selecting pumpkins, and spending time together outdoors while taking advantage of a welcome break in the rainy weather.

Adding to the seasonal excitement, all SUIMA students participated in the annual Pumpkin Splash at the Sun Ute Recreation Center. Students had a great time swimming with pumpkins and were thrilled to bring a pumpkin home at the end of the event. Smiles, laughter, and plenty of splashing made this activity a favorite for students and staff alike.

Our Upper Elementary students had the opportunity to participate in the Sip, Chat, and Chew event at the Multi-Purpose Building. Students organized a bake sale and enjoyed visiting with community members throughout the event. The Southern Ute Indian Montessori Academy School Board added to the fun by creating Boo Baskets that were given away during the gathering.

Growth Fund gave a presentation to Upper Elementary students. GF 101 discussed all the business and locations of all theses businesses. Mr. Shane Seibel asked all the students what they wanted to be when they grew up. We heard Art Teacher, Marine Biologist, Animator, and the rest really were not sure what they wanted to do when they grew up. It was a great presentation with lots of interaction with Mr. Seibel.

As always, we encourage families to help students arrive at school on time, well-rested, fed, and ready to learn each day. Regular attendance and punctuality contribute significantly to student success, helping children build strong learning habits, increase retention, and develop a lifelong love of learning.

Thank you for your continued support of SUIMA and the many opportunities we provide for our students to learn, grow, and connect with their community.
