A letter to SUIMA families and tribal members
Dear Southern Ute Indian Montessori Academy families and tribal members,
On behalf of the Southern Ute Indian Montessori Academy (SUIMA), we want to thank you for the trust you place in our school and for the many ways you continue to support our students, staff, and community. As we prepare for the 2026–2027 school year, we want to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the vision and mission of the Southern Ute Indian Montessori Academy. Every decision we make continues to be guided by what is in the best interest of our students while honoring our Southern Ute values, culture, and the Montessori philosophy.
Over the past year, a SUIMA Feasibility Assessment was commissioned to assess the long-term sustainability and success by reviewing challenges and opportunities for the upcoming school year. After substantial discussion and presentations, the SUIMA School Board recommended a Hybrid Educational Model. SUIMA educators will have a Montessori credential/diploma for Preschool through Kindergarten and a Teacher License for Lower and Upper Elementary.
As part of implementing recommendations from the feasibility assessment, we are strengthening internal systems, clarifying roles and responsibilities, and ensuring that educators and staff have the support and accountability necessary to best serve our students and families.
SUIMA would like to invite you to attend our upcoming Sip, Chat, & Chew hosted by the School Board on Friday, Oct. 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Multi-Purpose Facility. We will share highlights from the feasibility study, discuss the recommendations that will guide our next steps, provide updates on the hybrid model, and create space for your questions, reflections, and ideas. Meaningful dialogue with families and community members is essential as we continue shaping the future of SUIMA together.
This letter is being shared through the Tribal Member Portal (TMX), ClassDojo, and mailed to all current and former SUIMA families to ensure everyone has an opportunity to stay informed and engaged. If you have any questions, please contact Interim Principal Shawna Steffler at 970-563-2711 or by email at ssteffler@southernute-nsn.gov. Thank you for your continued partnership, patience, and belief in the potential of every SUIMA student. Together, we will continue building a school that centers on our children and honors our culture through a shared vision for generations to come.
With gratitude,
Shawna Steffler, Interim Principal
Roshae Weaver, School Board President
