Although attitudes are changing, too many folks still believe that the library’s role is primarily for checking out books and movies. Libraries today not only have the requisite books and movies but also a long list of programs, interesting activities, a collection of useful and educational items and much more. Libraries have become gathering places for social interaction and community.
Our goal is to be a center to bring people and ideas together for learning and personal growth. The library staff spends many hours helping patrons overcome technological hurdles, exploring new realms and acquiring new skills. You get to choose the direction of your growth, the library provides the resources you need for the journey.
Educational journeys at the library can be achieved in a variety of ways. They might involve a quick virtual visit to a foreign country or take years of study and practice learning electronics. The knowledge and skills you gain might be for recreation or pleasure or to enhance opportunities for higher education or career advancement.
These days it is quite possible to construct a personal educational adventure with the library as your travel companion. The staff has witnessed some remarkable transformations as patrons have become talented artists, writers and makers. Examples of these projects grace the walls and display cabinets of the library and inhabit the homes and offices of our patrons.
Educational opportunities at the library are for all ages. The library can enhance traditional public school classes but also supports life long learning. As an example, maybe you’re familiar with our Take & Make kits? These kits supply the materials for making a craft item and usually include information and worksheets to provide for a rounded learning experience. Youth gain practice at skills with scissors, measuring, gluing and following instructions. The worksheets give adults a chance to interact with their children and instill a deeper learning of the subject.
Adults can find groups pursuing similar interests to learn skills from art to tech. Sewing, knitting, art, and electronics have weekly meeting times. Mystery, Sci-Fi, Cooking, and Youth books clubs meet regularly. The IdeaLab is a fully stocked community workshop that people are saying is the best makerspace on the western slope. Almost all of the programs are free and supply the materials needed.
Educational success is determined by the individual. You manage the pace and depth of your learning with help from experienced staff and volunteers. The opportunities for self-guided learning have never been greater or more diverse. Many people are aware of how YouTube can be used to provide demonstrations and tutorials for everything from learning software to adjusting carburetors.
If you require certification or a degree there are paths to follow. One of the difficulties in online learning is finding useful and credible sites to provide what you need to achieve your goals. Your library can be a useful partner if you have questions or concerns about specific sites and programs.
