Ute language, the cornerstone of the Academy

With the annual Tribal Christmas dinner happening on Saturday, we hope the skit that will be performed will showcase the growth that has happened this year in terms of the Ute language.

As the Ute language is the cornerstone of our school, the SUIMA staff works diligently to keep the culture and traditions in the forefront of all that we do.

Every morning we begin with daily announcements and menu being said in the Southern Ute Language which are followed by the broadcast of the Flag Song over our PA System. Throughout the day, Ute Language lessons are taught formally and, more often, in random teachable moments. Walking into the upper elementary level, visitors and staff are greeted by the students using their Ute language.

We’ve also had the opportunity to revive our Eagle Wing drum group with the help of the Fort Lewis College drum group as an energetic bunch of boys – young and old – meet every Wednesday evening.

Through all of this, we are committed to helping our students learn where they come from and help them become strong in their heritage.
