Elbert J. Floyd Award winner Quentin Rael

Touchdown for Education

In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, Tribal Council is delighted to highlight an exemplary Ute student who serves as an inspiration to all. Quentin Rael, a Southern Ute Tribal Member, is the 2023 recipient for the Elbert J. Floyd Scholarship.

Quentin was recognized during the award ceremony on September 6, 2023 at Tribal Headquarters with members of the Floyd Family, the Southern Ute Education Department, and Tribal Council. Quentin was unable to attend in person, however his grandmother, Phyllis Escalante, and brother, Arrow Rael, accepted the award in his place.

A true student-athlete, Quentin balanced the rigors of his academic studies with the demands of playing center and guard on the varsity football team at Chandler High School, Arizona. He truly exemplifies dedication and perseverance. Quentin will graduate from Chandler High School as member of the Class of 2025. Tribal Council wishes Quentin well in his future studies and looks forward to his journey to success.

This annual award is in memory of Mr. Elbert J. Floyd and is presented by Mr. Floyd’s children and grandchildren to a deserving Southern Ute student.  Following Mr. Floyd’s years of service with the Tribe, he always believed in the importance of education and knowledge.
