As we continue to stay as healthy as possible, thank you for wearing your face coverings, helping with the temperature checks, and keeping your son or daughter home if he/she is sick or if a family member is sick. Our positivity rates are staying low and thankfully we have had little disruption to our school. Please remain diligent and cautious over the Christmas Break.

Thank you to Krista Richards, Shiri Howell, and Maria Rivera for overseeing our student and class picture day. Thank you to McKayla Lee and the Drum for letting us use your lighting and backdrops and thank you to SunUte for allowing us to use a corner of the gym for our photoshoot. A day for re-takes is being planned; more details will be forth coming.

The upper elementary students planned the school dress themes during Holiday Spirit Week. Staff and students dressed up like elves, the grinch, and with crazy sweaters! The students will have a day to swim with Santa – burr! It will be cold, but lots of fun! And we even had a visit from Santa, who was accompanied by the SUPD Community Officer.

There will not be an Eagle’s Nest article in the next edition of the Drum, so look for us in the new year. Enjoy your holiday break and have fun as you celebrate being with family and friends this year.

Tumiikukh kwanachi – Eagle of the Week

Aeden Pierce Richards is a third grader who has been at SUIMA since he was in the infant room, which began in 2013!

His favorite food comes from someone very special to him. It is his Grandpa Howard’s delicious stew. Yummy!

Aeden enjoys reading, learning and being challenged academically. His favorite book series is Dog Man.

His Ute name is Pukurachi, which means “Little Horse.”

Aeden’s favorite activity is drawing. He particularly enjoys drawing characters from various video games. Aeden is a smart, bright and amazing ‘aapachi who loves his family very much, enjoys spending time with friends, is willing to explore new things – even if they are scary, and is proud of his heritage. Learning the language and understanding more about his culture is very important to him.

Nuu’apaghapi – Ute phrases

Our Nuu’apaghapi for this edition is actually a song which was written by Ute Mountain Ute elder, Betty Howe. The SUIMA students have been practicing this Christmas song so that it can be provided to the tribal membership during the Christmas holiday.
