The Jicarilla Apache Nation and the Department of Youth are proud to announce an exciting weekend of cultural celebration and youth empowerment with two events: the 5th Annual Department of Youth Junior Rodeo, and the Department of Youth Children’s Contest Powwow. Both events will take place June 13–15, 2025, at the Little Beaver Fairgrounds in Dulce, N.M.
5th Annual Department of Youth Junior Rodeo | June 13–15
The Junior Rodeo is returning for its fifth year and will run independently – showcasing the Department of Youth’s capacity to organize a full-scale rodeo with homegrown talent and leadership.
Key Highlights Include:
Friday, June 13:
- Evening Jackpot Team Roping (Junior, Senior & Parent-Child divisions)
Saturday & Sunday, June 14–15:
- Full rodeo competition days starting with Grand Entry at 9:00 AM
- New Peewee Calf Riding
- Competitors must ride both days to qualify for buckles and prize money
- Stock provided by KY Cattle and Willie’s Cattle
Department of Youth Children’s Contest Powwow | Saturday, June 14
An annual cultural celebration, the DOY Children’s Contest Powwow aims to reignite youth involvement, especially in the 13–18 age group, to inspire and teach young people to engage with the powwow culture. The Powwow organizers invite families, students, and spectators to participate in this joyful and meaningful activity dedicated to the youth.
Featured Highlights:
- Southern Host Drum: Southern Medicine.
- Northern Host Drums: Daanzho Singers.
- MC: Steven Toya Sr. – educator, drum maker, and mentor.
- Contest in all Jr. and Teen Categories. Tiny Tots paid each session.
- Drum Contest: Northern/Southern combined, three places, two consolations.
- Special contest: Potato dance contest, hand drum contest, two-step contest, and more!
“The youth are asking for ways to get involved—we just need to give them that chance,” said Carleen Vigil, Powwow coordinator. “It’s about keeping the traditions alive, one step, one dance, one event at a time.”
Admission:
- $5 per vehicle (covers all passengers).
- Free entry for elders with designated passes.
- Drug- and Alcohol-Free Event.
Vendor Opportunities:
- The Department of Youth is currently accepting vendor applications for the 3-day event.
- Location: White vendor stands (first come, first served).
- Fee: $20 per day (Food or Tack vendors).
- Requirements: Copy of valid food handler’s permit for food vendors.
