Stick gamers test their skills

Hand Game extraordinaire, Mike Santistevan demonstrates to his niece, Ruby Tallbird which “bone” is being chosen by the opposing team during stickgame action. The Southern Ute Cultural Preservation Dept. hosted the 3-man Stick Game Tournament in the Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum's large classroom, Sat., Nov. 12, after the Southern Ute Thanksgiving dinner.
Betty Howe of team DGs, drums with a rattle and a beautiful hand drum during a game in the 2-man stick game tournament. DGs took home fourth place.
Nena Lopez, Jerem Box, and Patience Watts of team “Lopez” compete against team “Biya” for the final two places. “Biya” eventually defeated Lopez to take first place.
Philman Lopez, his family members, and others play a friendly game of stick game, betting in larger, combined teams, or side betting takes place by those playing against each other while awaiting the outcome of the tournament.
Third place winners, “Steff B.” at the conclusion of the 3-man Stick Game Tournament.
Fourth place winners, “DGs” at the conclusion of the 3-man Stick Game Tournament.
Second place winners, “Lopez” at the conclusion of the 3-man Stick Game Tournament.
First place winners, “Biya” at the conclusion of the 3-man Stick Game Tournament. “Biya” were undefeated throughout the 15-team tournament.
