The purpose of this letter is to announce that construction activities to renovate the former Southern Ute Community Action Programs (SUCAP) Peaceful Spirit Building to serve as the new home of the Boys and Girls Club of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe (BGC) will begin on Sept. 21, 2026.
Following consideration of the need to support youth services, improve long-term facility functionality, and provide appropriate and dedicated space for programs serving Tribal Member families and the broader Ignacio community, Tribal Council has directed Construction and Project Management to deliver the Boys and Girls Club project via Resolution No. 2026-010 and Resolution No. 2026-097 which dedicated the tribal trust land for the purposes of carrying out BGC operations and services and established the project budget, respectively.
The project will consist of full interior and exterior renovations, including landscaping, the creation of outdoor living and play spaces and an outdoor sports court. Security and controlled access will be a high priority; all spaces open to the children will be secure and monitored. The new building will have a lite-commercial kitchen, several gaming spaces, a maker’s lab, art lab, lounge areas for teens and youths, as well as office spaces for the BGC staff. A brand-new central heating and cooling system will be installed, along with new plumbing and an ADA compliant lift for access to the upper level. A full interior fire sprinkler system and alarm will be installed for safety purposes.
Project coordination will continue throughout construction and will include communication with the appropriate departments, contractors, and facility users as work progresses. This coordination is intended to ensure that construction activities are performed in a safe, organized, and efficient manner while supporting the overall purpose and long-term benefit of the Boys and Girls Club of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe.
C&PM is committed to minimizing disruptions during these construction activities. Specific efforts will be made to limit disruption to surrounding facilities, traffic, parking, pedestrian access, and Tribal operations. Construction scheduling, site access, and any temporary impacts will be coordinated and communicated as needed throughout the project. However, the parking areas around the BGC will be closed immediately and will remain so for the duration of the project. The closed areas are noted in red on the image below, and are needed for construction offices, contractor parking, material storage, dumpsters and safety boundaries. These areas will be fenced off and no access permitted for the duration of the project.
