Clementine Carrillo creates a forest during the Behavioral Health’s Skatepark Mural Project, held at the Multi-Purpose Facility, Friday, April 25. Carrillo utilized a variety of mediums to create her art, colored pencils and markers. Paints and other materials were provided through a grant secured by the Southern Ute Behavioral Health Department for the mural project.
Tamara Turner, Suicide & Substance Use Prevention Coordinator for Southern Ute Behavioral Health and Durango muralist, Parker Ledford, speak with Clementine Carrillo and her family during the Skatepark Mural Project. The deadline for ANY youth to submit art for the mural project has been extended to June 1, contact Tamara Turner at (970) 563-2487 for more information.
Parker Ledford, a Durango muralist, works on outlining a photo of the Piinu Nuuchi Skatepark vertical wall on the south side of the quarter-pipe ramp wall, where the artwork created by the local youth will be featured. Ledford has created other murals in Durango, Happy Pappy’s and the Durango laundromat and is currently working on a mural with Ute imagery on the American Legion building in Durango.

BEE HEARD: Youth art competition for the Píinu Núuchí Skate Park mural

Calling all Ignacio youth artists! If you haven’t heard by now, Southern Ute Behavioral Health is sponsoring a 20 x 8-foot youth-led mural to grace the east wall of the SunUte’s Píinu Núuchí Skate Park. Last Friday, Behavioral Health put on a brainstorming pizza party for youth, providing all the art supplies and lunch.

In light of this busy time of year, Behavioral Health has now extended the deadline for youth artists to submit their art for consideration in the mural. You now have until Sunday, June 1!

The theme of the mural is “Heritage and Belonging.” We want to support youth voices and visions around what it means to belong and what heritage means to them today.  Any medium is acceptable. We just ask that the art be oriented as a rectangle since the skate park wall is shaped that way.

After collecting multiple youth submissions Behavioral Health will host an open, community art show where all members of the community can come out to vote on the art they would like to see at the skate park!

We are looking for youth artists up to age 22 to submit art to be part of the mural. You can photograph or digitize it and submit it by email to tturner@southernute-nsn.gov or bring it by the Behavioral Health building at 4101 CR 222. For more information call Tamara at 970-749-7485.

Remember, Sunday, June 1 is the new deadline to submit your art for the mural. We look forward to hearing from you.

Here’s to your good health!
