We’re Golden! Golden High School students visit Tribe

Lyla Wilde and Mariah Martinez practice looming techniques while touring the Southern Ute Museum, led by Museum Education & Outreach Coordinator, Raelynn Frauenhoff. The students learned about the history and culture of the Utes, before meeting with Museum Registrar & Archivist, Fabian Martinez for a Boarding School presentation.
Bureau of Indian Affairs - Southern Ute Agency Fire Management Officer, Richard “Goose” Gustafson speaks to the students about the role of firefighters and the importance of team leadership and the coordination of different agencies. Students toured Scott’s Pond to see the impacts of the 2022 Bear Dance Fire firsthand.
Southern Ute Royalty introduce themselves to the Golden High students after the Cultural Preservation's presentation and before joining the students for some round dancing, with singing by the Yellow Jacket singers.
Golden students, Isaac Sorenson, Ayden Wallerstein, and Samantha Komoras examine a tagging collar used by Southern Ute Division of Wildlife to track and study migration patterns of animals on the Southern Ute Reservation. Staff members from Wildlife gave a presentation on wildlife and fisheries management.

Golden High School teacher, Becky Paige and other teachers meet with Southern Ute Tribal Council to begin their two-day annual visit with the Southern Ute Tribe.
Kicking off their two-day visit to the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, students meet with the Southern Ute Tribal Council to share their plans for the tour as well as share what they hope to discover during the trip. Chairman Melvin J. Baker gave out small tribal seal pins to each student following the meeting.
Ute Language Guide, Shawna Steffler shared different methods and tools used to teach the Ute language, giving insight into language reclamation work that is being done within the Tribe.
Students and guides give their individual shoutouts to listeners of KSUT Tribal Radio, students also shared their trip highlights during the live broadcast.
Social Studies teacher Mike Mendoza joins students during the live broadcast of KSUT Tribal Radio to give a shoutout to his family, students, and host Robert L. Ortiz. Students and guides visited the Eddie Box Jr. Media Center on Tuesday, April 9.
Students view projects curated by the Southern Ute Cultural Preservation Department, during this part of the tour students also gained insight into Ute cultural dances, songs, crafts and events.

On their final tour destination, Golden Seniors met with SunUte Director, Robin Duffy-Wirth and SunUte Director Apprentice, Morgann Graham at the SunUte Community Center on Wednesday, April 10.

Visiting students from Golden High School recently toured the Southern Ute Reservation during the southwest portion of their annual Senior Seminar, visiting various departments within the tribal organization, Tuesday, April 9 – Thursday, April 11. The tour is coordinated by Robert L. Ortiz each year and led by Social Studies teacher Mike Mendoza. For 11 years students have visited the Tribe to learn about the Southern Ute culture and gain insight into the Tribal organization. This year Golden High School seniors met with Tribal Council, Southern Ute Tribal Royalty, KSUT Tribal Radio, BIA/Fire Management, Southern Ute Growth Fund, and numerous other departments.
