RAISING AWARENESS FOR MMIW —

RODEO RETURNS TO FAIR —
Bull Riders compete once again, at the Sky Ute Fairgrounds, Friday, Sept. 13 at the Southern Ute Fair Rodeo.
KSUT LAUNCHES NATIVE BRAIDS —
KSUT Tribal Radio launched their Native Braids project on air over both the Four Corners and Tribal signals, Monday, Nov. 18. Native Braids features 11 unique stories, told by tribal members in interview style audio clips.
SHARING UTE CULTURE —
The Box family and relatives squeeze into the elevator dressed in their regalia just before they take to the stage at the Earth’s Call concert on Saturday, May 18 in Aspen, Colo.
CAPITOL HONORS UTES —
Tribal flags from the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe and the Ute Indian Tribe are now posted in the State Capitol Building in Denver. They were placed there on Thursday, March 21 when all three Ute tribes were recognized by the State of Colorado at what is now known as “Ute Day at the Capitol.”
TRI-UTE GAMES IN FORT DUCHESNE —
The Ute Warrior Challenge for the Tri-Ute Games was held on Friday, July 19. Young athletes and coaches took the challenge in Fort Duchesne’s heat and participated in a 5k run, obstacle course and swimming event. Athletes took it in full strides having to run the Ute Indian Tribe’s hilly terrain and brave the mud pit, but in the end it was all worth it, as they were cheered on by parents, coaches and spectators.
FLC GOES ALL OUT FOR N7 —
Noah Shadlow and some other Fort Lewis College students explained to Southern Ute youth the benefits of using the Native American center and joining the Native American run clubs on campus. Students, tribal leaders and youth attended events at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. on Friday, Nov. 15. The events were sponsored and held by Fort Lewis to highlight Native American Heritage Month.

SUICIDE PREVENTION A PRIORITY —
Suicide prevention has been on the minds of everyone, from community members to tribal departments. With outreach efforts being spearheaded in the school district and at a grassroots level. Taking steps to engage those in need and raise awareness with a resounding message that there is hope and support.
SAND CREEK MEMORIAL —
Runners from the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes of Oklahoma raise their eagle staffs and get the crowd excited for the last leg of the Sand Creek Spiritual Healing Run-Walk on Sunday, Dec 1 at the Riverside Cemetery in Denver. A group of 45 Cheyenne and Arapaho runners and supporters attend the 21st annual Sand Creek Massacre Spiritual Healing Run. The healing run is held each year to honor and commemorate the massacre of 230 Cheyenne and Arapaho elders, women and children.
VETERANS IN HAWAII —
The 45th annual Honolulu Intertribal Powwow brought Native American groups from the mainland to Ala Moana Beach Park on Oct. 5-6 to dance and perform with fellow tribal members living in Hawaii. The Southern Ute Veterans Association Color Guard led the Grand Entry for this year’s intertribal event.

A full moon filled the sky during the weekend of tribal fair, where rodeo riders ready their horses for competition at the Sky Ute Fairgrounds.

Southern Ute tribal elder, San Jean Burch hung red sings and cutouts of red dresses in her front yard to raise awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. Red dresses are a symbol of awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.
POLIS USHERS NEW ERA —
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis and Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera paid a visit to the Southern Ute Indian Reservation on Tuesday, Aug. 20, which included a trip to Ms. Pepper’s Kindergarten Class; Polis makes his exit by way of a small door designed for the young students.
FLC GOES ALL OUT FOR N7 —
Shaundai Poncho, Bird Red and RC Lucero sing honor songs during the halftime performance of Fort Lewis College’s “Nike N7 Night” on Friday, Nov. 15.
DREAM WARRIORS INSPIRE —

NANAETO, UNDERCLASSMAN OF THE YEAR —
Avaleena Nanaeto of Ignacio High School was named The Durango Herald’s Girls Underclassman of the Year for the 2018-2019 season. She qualified for state in cross-country and was also a key defensive stopper for her freshman season.
SOUTHERN UTE DRUM TURNS 50 —
Thursday, May 9 marked the 50th anniversary of the Southern Ute Drum. To celebrate this special occasion, a special edition of the Drum highlighted some of the most memorable articles, photographs and historical events published over the past 50 years.
