Tribe selects Baker as new Growth Fund Executive Director


The Southern Ute Indian Tribe announced Raymond Baker as the new Growth Fund Executive Director on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Baker will begin his new role starting Monday, Feb. 6.

The Southern Ute Indian Reservation – The Southern Ute Indian Tribal Council is pleased to announce the selection of Raymond A. Baker as the new Executive Director for the Southern Ute Indian Tribe Growth Fund. Baker will assume the responsibilities of directing the Growth Fund with the objective of providing maximum profit and return on invested capital while meeting the current and long-range goals approved by the Tribal Council. In commenting on his new position, Baker stated, “The Growth Fund is a vitally important part of the Tribe and a model of success in Indian country. I am looking forward to joining a great team of dedicated workers who have contributed to its success.”

Baker, who is a member of the Tribe, is currently employed with the Growth Fund’s Safety and Environmental Compliance Management Group, a position he assumed after retiring from a successful career in the United States Navy. Baker served with distinction during a career spanning over three decades, most recently as Officer-in-Charge of Specialized Research Diving Detachment. He brings 30 years of upward progressively responsible leadership, from a Junior Enlisted Sailor to a Commissioned Naval Commanding Officer.

Upon completion of his honorable naval service he received personal Letters of Appreciation from Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Ronald Regan Presidential Library, and Jimmy Carter, and Governors from the states of Florida, Connecticut, Washington and Colorado. Personal awards earned: Legion of Merit Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3), Presidential Unit Citation, and various other unit citations and personal awards.

Baker is a graduate of Durango High School and Mustang University (Naval Officer Commissioning School, FL), he has also attended City College of Chicago, (IL), Gulf Coast Community College (FL), and Coast Line Community College (CA).

Chairman Frost stated, “The Tribe looks forward to the exciting future for the Southern Ute Growth Fund under Mr. Baker’s leadership.”

Baker will assume the new position on Monday, Feb. 6, 2017
